Georgia State Flag

My Mom was thougtful enough to order a special puzzle for us online, so we could work on it together as a family. The puzzle was of each of the 50 states, with pictures of the state flag and the state capital building.

We became intrigued with the Georgia state flag, since it seemed to look rather different than most of the others. Furthermore, we remembered there being some sort of controversery over the confederate flag in Georgia, so we decided to do a little investigation. We turned to the following Wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_state_flag

We noticed that the flag on the box was neither the historical flag, nor the current one, cluing us into the fact that there have been a number of flags in Georgia's recent history. Whoever wrote the article gave us a good laugh:

The 2001 flag, intended to be less offensive, never gained
popularity amongst Georgians. It was perceived as having been "designed by a
committee," and was aesthetically complicated, crowded with many small elements.
In a 2001 survey on state and provincial flags in North
America conducted by the North American Vexillological Association, the redesigned Georgia flag was ranked the worst by a wide margin; the
group stated that the flag "violates all the principles of good flag design." It
was likened to a Denny's restaurant placemat by at least
one critic, but that was withdrawn as to not offend Denny's.

I still don't know what a Vexillogical Association is, but I do know we managed to finish the puzzle in one night, which is pretty good time, even for the Van Bruggen clan.
