At the end of June, Ryan and I flew to Charlotte, North Carolina, where my brother John and his wife Elizabeth live. My mom took the train from Durham, and together we all celebrated her 65th birthday.
The first place we went was the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. Many of the botanical gardens I've been to follow more of the English type of garden, which is intentionally planned to look "natural", i.e. a swash of flowers here, some trees over there. This was one of the first gardens in the U.S. I've been to that are more French in nature, i.e. a formal garden, where every flower and brook has its place.
The garden is built quite a ways outside of town and was basically plopped down in the middle of a field, with the idea, it seems, that there's room for expansion down the road. That being said, however, it was sort of odd to be in such a perfectly manicured garden, knowing that directly outside the tall walls of trees was essentailly wilderness. (Talk about opposites!) |

 | John and Elizabeth have a new pool in their back yard, which all of us took advantage of. We even decided to do a little synchronized swimming for the camera. |
